Course of Study

University Prep offers seven academic years from Grades 6 through 12. In addition to the academic requirements, all students must participate in both the fine arts and physical education programs.

Course Offerings
Not all courses are offered every semester or every year. Each semester’s scheduling bulletin will list courses offered that semester.

Schedule Changes
Student-initiated schedule changes must be completed within the first three weeks of the term. Seniors who wish to make a schedule change must obtain permission from the registrar to ensure they will meet graduation requirements.

Credits
The number of credits a course receives is determined by the number of periods the course meets each week. Credits earned at other institutions will be reflected on the transcript as received from the sending institutions. When year-long courses receive one grade for the entire year, the grade will be entered for each semester.

Audits
Students may audit a class with special permission. Enrollment of students taking courses for credit will take precedence over students wishing to audit. Students receive neither credit nor a permanent notation in their record for auditing a class.

Independent Study
By special request, a department may offer an independent study to one or more students. See individual department head for details.

Off-Campus Education
Departments will consider requests for off-campus education credits (at four-year colleges and universities, community colleges, institutes or other qualifying institutions) on a case-by-case basis.

Study Away
Students enrolled at University Prep may study abroad for all or part of a school year and receive credit toward graduation on a case-by-case basis. Enrolled students who wish to study abroad for all or part of a year make arrangements through the appropriate division director who consults with department heads whose subject areas are involved.

Senior Project
The Senior Project provides seniors with a capstone to their high school years by giving them the opportunity to follow a passion or interest on their own. The project is designed by the individual student, who arranges an independent activity away from the University Prep campus. The decision to do a Senior Project is voluntary, but the school must approve the project proposal.
