College Case Studies Program
tuesday, May 5 At uprep
or
wednesday, May 6 at the bush school
Welcome to the UPrep, Bush School, Northwest School, Rainier Scholars, and Seattle Academy of Arts and Sciences College Case Studies Program webpage. Below you will find important information about this joint program. During this in-person event, families will work together in small groups, led by college admissions counselors, to read applications and make admissions decisions as part of a mock admissions committee. On both evenings, the program will begin with registration and room assignments, followed by the case studies and a college fair. Families can attend on the date and at the location that works best for them. There will not be a meal provided, so please eat dinner beforehand.

The Cases
We will not be handing out printed copies of the cases. If possible, please take the time to read the applications for the three students below before attending the program. Additionally, it would be helpful if you familiarize yourself with the institution, Fairbrook University, where these applicants are applying. We encourage all students and families to either print or download the cases to a device prior to the event. Students and families are unlikely to be in the same classroom during the event, so they will not be able to share access. Please plan accordingly.
Case Studies Guidelines
- While these are fictional applications, they are based on the experiences of real people. Just as admissions officers would never speak disparagingly about a student in an actual admissions committee, we expect participants to evaluate these candidates with care. Throughout this exercise, we invite you to share both the strengths and the challenges of each candidate’s profile, keeping in mind that people in the room may identify with one or more of the candidates.
- Evaluating applicants can be complex and, as you will discover through this exercise, you will be faced with competing priorities in coming to a final decision. We invite you to disagree with one another, but we ask that you do so respectfully, speaking from your own experience.
- The purpose of the Case Studies Program is to learn about the philosophy behind the college admissions process as a whole and what a student can and cannot control as they apply to college.
- The mini College Fair at the end of the program will provide students with the opportunity to learn about individual colleges more specifically.
