King5 Anchors Visit UPrep History Class
Three King5 anchors and reporters--UPrep parent Joyce Taylor, Alex Rozier, and Jack Whittenberg--visited David Marshall's "Topics in U.S. History" class today to discuss the creation and consumption of news in 2018. The distinguished journalists, who between the three of them have won two National Edward R. Murrow Awards and seven Emmys, spoke about how television is using social media to both report the news and engage viewers in a direct exchange, and entertained student questions.
Taylor made the case that television today must provide content across all platforms to meet the audience where they are. While Facebook is still where a majority of social media users get their news, Whittenberg shared several YouTube videos he shot to reach a younger audience.
Rozier recounted the dramatic day in December when he and a cameraman were covering the inaugural ride of the Amtrak train to Portland on a new route. They decided to disembark in Tacoma to cover a protest march there, shortly before the train derailed, blocking I-5 and resulting in multiple injuries and fatalities.
