UPrep Holds 6th Annual Social Justice Day
University Prep's 6th annual all-school Social Justice Day is taking place today, March 13. Organized in conference style, the day is filled with notable speakers, workshops, affinity groups, and "unconference" discussions on a vast range of social justice issues. This year's speakers include: the writer Ijeoma Oluo; the hip hop artist Draze; the gender and sexuality activist Danni Askini; Tom Ikeda, head of Densho, a nonprofit dedicated to the memory of the Japanese internment; and high school teacher and writer Jon Greenburg. Students have selected among a menu of over 60 topics and 15 affinity groups.
As this event continues to grow, UPrep is expecting approximately 140 outside guests, including student delegations from the Overlake School, the Bush School, Eastside Prep, Evergreen School, Nathan Hale High School, Lakeside School, Roosevelt High School, Seattle Academy, Billings, Bishop Blanchet, Chief Sealth, Rainier Beach High School, Villa Academy, and Santa Fe Prep.
"The goal is to provide a safe space for critical analysis and conversation on contemporary social justice topics. We suspend regular academic classes so that every member of our community is able to lean in and engage in dialogue to promote deeper understanding of identities and issues," says Head of School Matt Levinson.
