UPrep Students Attending Latino Leadership Conference
Five University Prep Upper School students are attending the annual student leadership conference for Latinos and Latinas, LEAP, which is taking place in Olympia February 8-10. The theme this year is "Strive to Thrive: The Brown Excellence Revolution."The students are accompanied by Spanish teachers Alma Andrade and Jacob Taylor-Mosquera.
This is the first time that UPrep is sending students to the conference, which brings hundreds of participants from across the state for two days of workshops on civic engagement and advocacy. The goal is to provide students with the tools to become leaders in their communities. On the second day of the conference, students will have the opportunity to meet with state legislators.
On Friday, Taylor-Mosquera will make a presentation at the conference entitled "Books and Mirrors." He will speak about the importance of a quality education (Books) and will also encourage the attendees to look for common ground with other people from the outset (Mirrors). "I look forward to challenging students on their perceptions and to seeing what results from this process," says Taylor-Mosquera.
