Sustainable, environmentally conscious, local outdoor experiences provide University Prep Upper School students the opportunity to combine the school’s mission of social responsibility with environmental stewardship. Students may hike past lakes and streams in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness area, traverse valleys and mountain passes in the Goat Rocks Wilderness area, and spend a night in an igloo of their own construction while snow camping in the Gold Creek valley. These optional trips take place during mid-Winter Break and over the summer.
The dedication to Leave No Trace ethics and sustainability extends to all facets of the program; we keep the program footprint as small as possible in the urban environment as well as the wilderness. By using local destinations and facilities, fees for students and the environmental impact of the program travel are kept to a minimum. Participation in the Outdoor Program is part of every Middle School student’s experience at University Prep, and the program is available to all Upper School students who would like to participate.
